Red Cross increases supplies to Georgia: The International Committee of the Red Cross has increased provisions of medical supplies for the thousands of people displaced by the conflict in Georgia. Supplies include surgical equipment for seriously injured patients, a mobile clinic in Gori to provide basic care to elderly and chronically ill people, and materials for obstetric care at Tskhinvali’s main hospital.

NICE issues guidance on ventilator associated pneumonia: The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence has recommended that patients on ventilators and who are intubated should be positioned with their upper body elevated, if possible, to reduce the risk of pneumonia. Oral antiseptics should be used as part of oral hygiene for all patients who are intubated and on mechanical ventilation. (See www.nice.org.uk/PatientSafetyPilot.)
