Anita Panda was born in Kishoregunja, India. She gained a scholarship to Lady Brabourne College, Calcutta. From here she entered Calcutta Medical College in 1959, qualifying in 1964.
Anita came to the United Kingdom in 1969, her first post being senior house officer in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Hammersmith Hospital. She achieved her MRCOG in 1970, and worked as a registrar in the London area and the Midlands for the next seven years. In 1977 she and her husband left the UK to work in Iran but returned one year later because of the political changes in the country.
In 1981 Anita entered community medicine, gaining diplomas in public health medicine and community paediatrics in the subsequent years. She worked as a community medical officer in Walsall for the remainder of her career and was due to retire in April 2008.
She leaves a husband, Samin, and a son.
