The parents of Daniel James, who accompanied him to Zurich for assisted suicide, will not be prosecuted, the director of public prosecutions, Keir Starmer, has announced. Although there was sufficient evidence to prosecute them for aiding and abetting their 23 year old tetraplegic sons suicide, it would not be in the public interest, Mr Starmer said.
Daniel, injured playing rugby, was "fiercely independent" and decided to take his own life despite his parents "imploring him not to" (BMJ 2008;337:a2195, doi:10.1136/bmj.a2195).
