Charity sets up fund to defend researcher being sued for libel

The registered charity HealthWatch has set up a fund to support Peter Wilmshurst, a consultant cardiologist who is facing a libel action in the High Court in London over comments he made to a US based medical website about a trial in which he was the joint principal investigator (BMJ 2008;337:a2412, 3 Nov, doi:10.1136/bmj.a2412).

The fund has been launched with a donation of £5000 ({euro}5900; $7440) from John Garrow, a past chairman of HealthWatch and former professor of nutrition at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London. The aim is to help indemnify Dr Wilmshurst against legal fees incurred after his employer, Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, and his defence body, the Medical Defence Union (MDU), refused to support him in defending the action.

He has already run up legal bills of nearly £60 000 defending the claim by NMT Medical, the US manufacturer of the STARFlex . . . [Full text of this article]
