Mobile phones do not pose health risk, German survey shows

Mobile phones, cordless phones, and cordless base stations next to beds are safe, pose no risk of cancer to adult users, and do not cause headaches or sleeping problems. These are the findings of a decade long German programme of studies.

In some cases genetic activity in human cells was found to change under the influence of radiation from mobile and cordless phones, but this did not alter the programme’s overall conclusion that the phones were safe.

The results were presented this month by the German environment minister, Sigmar Gabriel, and representatives of the Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz, the Federal Office for Protection from Radiation, in Berlin. However, the experts cautioned that the study results could not say whether exposure for more than 10 years posed any risks to health. Furthermore, no data were yet available on the effects of electromagnetic radiation on children.
