The open letter to me from Wheatley makes several statements about the case of David Southall.1 Southall has appealed to the High Court, and it would be inappropriate for me to comment on the case at this stage.
But I am very concerned about Wheatleys conclusion that paediatricians will not be fairly dealt with by the General Medical Council (GMC). This is wrong, and it is not borne out by the facts. It is important that he and those members of Professionals Against Child Abuse (PACA) who agree with him do not allow their unhappiness over this particular decision to create an unjustified perception that there is a problem with the regulatory system for doctors. By overstating the case, critics of the GMC are running the risk of creating the very problem they say they want to address. They are fuelling a perception that the GMC is somehow bent on
