Commission to visit trusts unannounced: The Healthcare Commission will be carrying out unannounced inspections at 120 NHS trusts over the coming year to check compliance with the government's hygiene code. The code was introduced to tackle healthcare associated infections, such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium difficile.
Bush backs extra spending on AIDS: The US president, George Bush, asked Congress to double the initial $15bn (£7.5bn;
11bn) to fight HIV/AIDS to $30bn for another five years. The president's emergency plan for AIDS relief, which expires in September 2008, has supported treatment for 1.1 million people in 15 targeted countries, including one million people in Africa.
