Breast cancer screening programme detects more early cases: The NHS Breast Screening Programme for England detected more cases of breast cancer in 2005-6 than in any previous year. More than 13 500 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in women aged 50 and over8.3 per 1000 women screenedan increase of 13% from the previous year. More than 1.6 million women were screened under the programme in 2005-6, a 10% increase from 2004-5. See www.ic.nhs.uk/pubs/bsp0506.
Canada funds human papillomavirus vaccinations: The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada has applauded Canada's federal government for allocating $C300m (£131m;
194m; $258m) in 2007-8 to help launch a national programme for human papillomavirus vaccinations for women and girls. Human papillomavirus is the second leading cause of death from cancer among Canadian women.
