This figure is a memento mori ("remember that you must die") figure from 1800, used for spiritual contemplation. It is just one of the million objects from across the globe collected by Sir Henry Wellcome, the pharmacist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who founded the Wellcome Trust.

It will be on show at a public event in London on Thursday, to publicise and celebrate the opening later this year of the Wellcome Collection, a new £30m public venue for the Wellcome Trust. The event, which includes the showing of a specially commissioned short film, and the sampling of life affirming food and drink, such as chilli chocolate and tequila, will explore the fine line between life and death.

A Matter of Life and Death is being held on 15 March 2007, 19 30-22 00, at Shoreditch Town Hall, London. Tickets are free. Book in advance by emailing events@wellcome.ac.uk
