Serial blood samples before and after dental extraction in 500 children have shown that bacteria are cleared from the blood within 12 minutes, more rapidly than previously assumed. Fifteen pre-extraction samples had evidence of bacteria, as did 102 of the samples taken after extraction. Bacteraemia was highest for the first 7.5 minutes, then diminished rapidly. The authors comment that for conservative dentistry (such as fillings) the operative time should be added to estimate a clearance time.
