Conviction for assisted suicide upheld: A Dutch appeal court has upheld the conviction of the founder of suicide support group De Einder for helping a 25 year old woman to kill herself. Jan Hilarius, aged 74, offered written instructions on suicide and medication. His sentence was reduced from 12 to four months because of his age and previous unblemished record. Dutch euthanasia laws allow only doctors to assist suicide.

Poverty in US increases: The poverty rate in US residents increased from 11.3% in 2000 to 12.7% in 2004. The population that earned less than half the poverty threshold for a family of four—$19 307 (£10 135; {euro}15 003)—grew by 20%. The study is to be published in October's American Journal of Preventive Medicine (www.ajpm-online.net, doi: 10.1016/j.amepre.2006.06.022).
