NHS gets new chief executive: David Nicholson, currently the chief executive of NHS London, is to take over as chief executive of the NHS from Sir Ian Carruthers in September. Sir Ian has been acting NHS chief executive since the retirement of Sir Nigel Crisp in March. He will now take up the role of chief executive of NHS South West.
Germany sets timetable to ban smoking in public: Horst Seehofer, Germany's minister for consumer affairs, expects a ban on smoking in public buildings to take effect next year. Unlike some other EU states, Germany has no ban on smoking in either public spaces or bars and restaurants, with smoking still allowed in nursing homes, hospitals, and other municipal buildings.
