NHS gets new chief executive: David Nicholson, currently thechief executive of NHS London, is to take over as chief executiveof the NHS from Sir Ian Carruthers in September. Sir Ian hasbeen acting NHS chief executive since the retirement of SirNigel Crisp in March. He will now take up the role of chiefexecutive of NHS South West.

Germany sets timetable to ban smoking in public: Horst Seehofer,Germany's minister for consumer affairs, expects a ban on smokingin public buildings to take effect next year. Unlike some otherEU states, Germany has no ban on smoking in either public spacesor bars and restaurants, with smoking still allowed in nursinghomes, hospitals, and other municipal buildings.
