Famine threat in east Africa: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization has warned that extensive drought in the Horn of Africa means that 11 million people are on the brink of starvation.

Overweight and obesity increase in Canada: Ontario researchers have reported a major increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Canada in the past two decades. For instance, the percentage of people with a body mass index ≥40 more than tripled from 0.4% in 1990 to 1.3% in 2003.

Resistance in malaria monotherapy is feared: The World Health Organization has asked manufacturers to stop producing antimalarial drugs that are based solely on artemisinin, because of fears that resistance may develop. New treatment guidelines say that it should be used only in combination with other drugs.
