In this issue (pp 1529-33) we reproduce the article on doctors and smoking by Doll and Bradford Hill which appeared exactly 50 years ago, in the 26 June 1954 issue of the British Medical Journal. The cover shows Sir Richard Doll and one of the doctors who took part in the study, Professor John Crofton, then and now.
