The UK government has proposed replacing the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. In its recent NHS Plan, which applied only to England, the government said that the self regulatory bodies had to change. It said that they should be smaller, have more lay members, and have faster, more transparent procedures.
The health minister, Lord Hunt, said last week that the new council would be given tougher powers to tackle poor professional conduct and performance and would introduce streamlined procedures to ensure fitness for practice, including quality assurance of professional training. In addition, the government's consultation paper proposes that the Health Professions Council will replace the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine and its 12 professional boards.
