World population growth rate slows: The world population is growing at 80 million a year and will exceed six billion next year, according to the United Nations Population Fund. Over 90% of the growth will take place in developing countries. But the rate of growth is gradually slowing owing to successful family planning programmes.

FDA warns doctors about albumin: The Food and Drug Administration has written to US doctors to alert them to research published in the BMJ (1998; 317:235-40) that questioned the medical benefit of treating critically ill patients with albumin. The FDA says that the research warrants serious consideration but calls for more studies. In the meantime doctors should exercise discretion in the use of albumin.
