Dobson stops reorganisation of services at Trafford hospital

Health secretary Frank Dobson has forbidden Salford and Trafford Health Authority to continue its planned reorganisation of children's inpatient care.

Health authority executives and paediatric service advisers were stunned when Mr Dobson issued the direction on 30 June, stating: "The Secretary of State hereby directs The Salford and Trafford Health Authority not to proceed further with its proposal known as 'Future Hospital Care for the Children and Young People of Salford and Trafford.' " The health authority was also directed to discontinue the consultation exercise associated with the proposal and not to consult on further proposals about future hospital care for children without Mr Dobson's consent.

It is only the second time in the history of the NHS that such a direction--under section 17 of the National Health Service Act 1977--has been issued.
