Market testing and privatisation of clinical services

EDITOR, - As a consultant pathologist and director of a large pathology laboratory in a district general hospital I am becoming increasingly concerned over the apparent lack of professional support that the BMA and the royal colleges offer their members when their livelihood and standards of practice are threatened by market testing. Pathologists are well aware of the controversy over pathology services at the Lister Hospital (see p 741) and elsewhere.1 We see ourselves in the firing line in the next two years when chief executives increasingly flex their muscles and try to make short term savings potentially at the expense of quality, training, and loyalty to the NHS pathology service. Pathology services are regarded by many managers as discrete packages with little relevance to clinical services, similar to cleaning, catering, laundry, and "hotel" facilities, and ripe for privatisation.
