Jeremy Taylor

Jeremy Taylor is chief executive of National Voices, the national coalition of health and care charities in England. He joined in 2009 - a year after its launch - and has grown National Voices’ capacity and reputation as a strong, independent champion for patients, carers and the voluntary sector.

Jeremy provides a strategic voice on person centred care, the engagement of citizens in decisions about health, and the role of the voluntary and community sector. He acts as an expert advisor, writer, commentator, media spokesman, conference speaker and facilitator of leadership development. He is currently chair of the People and Communities Board, which champions person centred approaches to health and care as part of the NHS Five Year Forward View programme.

In October 2016 he was included for the 6th year running in the Health Service Journal annual list of 100 people with the greatest influence in health.

Jeremy joined the voluntary sector in 2007 and was previously a senior official at HM Treasury.

Jeremy Taylor's declaration of competing interests:

National Voices is a charity and the national coalition of health and care charities in England. Its major sources of funding are government grant; fees for speaking, advice and consultancy; membership subscriptions and corporate donations.

As chief executive I am regularly called upon to speak in a variety of settings and forums to provide a patient or health charity perspective. Whenever possible I seek to charge for my time as part of a policy of full cost recovery that is important for the financial sustainability of National Voices. All such income goes directly to National Voices. Other than my salary, I derive no additional financial gain from any activities I undertake for National Voices.

All National Voices’ policies, positions and statements are developed by staff and trustees of the organisation in collaboration with our members and informed by a broader evidence base about what matters to patients and their families. Our relationship with funders is governed by an ethical funding policy that requires transparency about our income sources and mandates that National Voices “will not endorse or promote products or services provided by non member funders or supporters, or lobby for their commercial interests, and will seek to avoid acting so as to give the appearance of favouring commercial interests.” The ethical policy also mandates that National Voices retains complete editorial control over the content of its plans, policies, and public statements.

In the last 12 months I have spoken at events organised by a number of private sector organisations and been recompensed by them for my time and expenses. The companies concerned were Abbvie, Pfizer, Baxter, ABHI, EyeforPharma, Astellas, Virgin, and Gilead. In each case my presentations were of a general nature drawing on the work and positions of National Voices, were entirely compliant with our ethical funding policy and had no bearing on the commercial interests of the companies concerned.
